They have a mix of standard Chinese favorites and traditional Szechuan dishes, so no matter what you’re looking for you will be pleasantly surprised.
If you stop in the restaurant for lunch or dinner, you will find ample seating with low lighting and charming décor which creates a warm and comfortable feeling. Want an old favorite? Frank Bruni, from The New York Times, reviewed Szechuan Gourmet, giving it 2 stars! “No Need for Hot Sauce – Szechuan Gourmet in Midtown keeps the heat on!”
NY Times Review
I won't be ordering from here again anytime soon. Placed the order at 5:45pm, received confirmation email at 5:46pm with a delivery estimate of 30-45 minutes. Delivery guy didn't call from lobby until 7:37pm. Almost 2 hours and of course the food is cold. I know how good the food can be here and how popular it is. I eat in the restaurant more than I order delivery but if you can't keep up with the deliveries, don't take the order or at least quote a realistic estimate.

Szechuan Gourmet has a reputation for authentic cuisine, and they never miss the mark. Their chow fun and pork belly are to die for.

It never let me down. Awesome!

Best, most authentic Szechaun food in the midtown area. Soy Chilli dumplings and cumin lamb are particularly great. Order from Szechaun menu -- "regular" chinese items are good, but not the reason to order from this restaurant. They are known for their spicy dishes - the ma po tofu in particular is a great spicy dish. This is the restaurant I recommend to all my friends in the area - it's the best!

all time favorite is stir fried chix w/ roasted chili peanuts. very tasty, spicy, and nice portion.

Always good!

This is my go-to spot for Chinese in midtown (not only bc it's very close to my office) bc of the clear consideration of the flavor with the food. Chinese restaurants are a dime a dozen out here, but the stuff coming out of the kitchen is legitimately delicious. If you're a vegetarian, be sure to read the descriptions of dishes very clearly as a lot of the seemingly veggy/tofu dishes in fact do contain pork (delicious, tasty pork). The mapo tofu is one of my favorites here - it will burn your face off.

Very slow, not patient, rude, late. Will not order again. Really bad. Does not respect to customers.

Dan Dan Noodles are fabulous. Although I didn't really need anything else :)

Food was really good however the delivery time was way too long. Took almost 1.5 hours for the food to arrive despite receive an email confirmation that it would take 30-45min. Don't think I'd order from here again just because of the delivery time. I'd suggest the restaurant hire more delivery men.

Extremely fast service and very tasty - the chili pork dumplings were delicious and the chicken with chili was EXTREMELY hot indeed!

Most authentic Szechuan Chinese food in midtown - and that's coming from a Chinese-American foodie raised by parents from Szechuan. Try the pork & bamboo shoots and the spicy eggplant/asparagus/string bean stir-fry. They use a lot of oil but then again most authentic Asian food is still healthier than other cuisines.

As far as authentic Chinese Szechuan province food goes, they're not bad. Very quick for pick up since I work right across the street. Prices are fairly reasonable for lunches. I went there for dinner one time as well, and the food was very good!

Chili cumin lamb, pork belly, and mung bean salad are awesome !

I've always found the food at Szechuan Gourmet to be well prepared and delicious but was very disappointed to see the oil slick in the Black Bean Chicken. It was pretty disgusting. I hope this was just an off day for the chef but they should be advised to correct this. Thanks.

Good and very spicy food delivered very quickly.

The food is good and affordable but you should expect long waiting times (75+ min) during peak hours.
Posted 3 years ago by Patrick S.
Terrible food. Terrible service. Would never order from again.
Posted 3 years ago by John H.
Delivery is relatively fast, but avoid noon on Friday which seems to be peak. We like to order right at 11:30 when they open for fastest service. Highlights for delivery are smoked tofu & celery, spicy cucumbers, dan dan, crispy chicken w/ green chiles LS, mapo tofu LS, 10 ingredient mai fun, pork belly w/ leeks LS, pork with braised tofu LS, etc.

I order from Szechuan Gourmet bi-weekly for my spicy fix, and I have a few faves: Crispy Lamb with Cumin and Fish Fillet with Napa. They are super hot and super delicious! I'd recommend this place to all my friends!

Terrible delivery service. I waited more than 1 hour while my office was 10 min away. Called the restaurant and the person was very impatient

Best szechuan food I've had. Delicious, really spicy, and the large portions reheat well. Delivery is reasonably prompt, and I've never had anything missing yet.
Posted 4 years ago by Alexander M.
Enjoy the pit stickers and the ox tongue. General Tso is missing flavor and a bit oily.
Posted 4 years ago by Mark L.
two dish I ordered was very greasy. Dry meat covered in grease.
Posted 4 years ago by matthew c.
Great food. Missing items 50% of the time. Sometimes a missing item and the wrong item. The amount of food is also very inconsistent. Sometimes you get 50%, mostly 75% of the container. I only get my food, extra spicy as requested, about a third of the time. I wish there were more chinese places with a similar food quality in the area.

delivery estimate was 15-30 minutes and over the course of 2 hours, whenever i called to check on it, they kept saying "the boy" was on his way. when i finally asked to cancel the order, they would not do it so i had to call seamless to take care of it. very very rude service.

Delivery came in less than 30 minutes and despite the other reviews, the delivery man was perfectly friendly. The chicken lo mein was good with a spicy kick to it. I was bummed because I ordered chicken with mixed vegetables (which everywhere else comes with the same brown sauce that chicken with broccoli comes with). It tasted fine, just not what I wanted.

authentic. love anything braised there.
Posted 4 years ago by Annie W.
The spiciness is fantastic with just a hint of sweetness in the sauce.
Posted 4 years ago by Vincent L.
worst chinese food I have ever had. I threw it out and ordered indian food. $15 down the garbage chute. General Tso's chicken was floating in an inch of watery liquid with very poor quality chicken

Ordered L6. Stir-Fried Prawns w/Chili Minced Pork. Shrimp was not fresh. Sauce was too garlicy and salty. Some of the asparagus was good, but overall pretty awful.

love it ! didnt know there's one in flushing.
Posted 4 years ago by Karen T.
Authentic Chinese food. Their Cantonese dishes are good too. Their food is never too oily and salty like other Chinese restaurants. The best in mid-town area.
Posted 4 years ago by Warren G.
The food took 1.5hrs to get here and when I called to get an ETA, they just said the food was on the way and hung up. They didn't even bother to ask for my name. My crispy spicy garlic chicken wasn't crispy, but maybe that had something to do with it being 1.5hrs before it got delivered.

Awesome food, Fish with Roasted Chili is the best.

Food is great, but check your order before you let the delivery guy leave! Got 1 of my entrees wrong, and one was missing. Seamless Web credited the account for these items. If not for them, I probably wouldn't have gotten my money back.

Worst delivery service ever. It took 2 hours for the food to arrive and the restaurant is only a few blocks away from my office. Never ordering from here again.

Ma po doufu here if asked to make chinese style with ma jiang is very good
Posted 5 years ago by YUAN-RUI X.
The food was terrible and none of the ingredients tasted fresh. The sesame chicken tasted like the chicken was days old and dry. I would not buy from this place again.

Service and Food. I ordered food on May 12th at 2:48 pm and paid for it to be delivered. It did not arrive until almost 3:45 pm. I called the front desk, no apology, no mention of discounting the order. The delivery man is always very nice, and he was obviously over-burdened. My food was cold and coagulated by the time it arrived and they still charged me for it, even though the delivery time is listed as 15-30 minutes. The restaurant is on West 39th Street and I am on West 31st Street. I am never ordering from this place again.

A bit expensive for Chinese food but very good. Not too oily. Love the wonton soup.
Posted 5 years ago by Lauren P.
pot stickers were amazing, spicy sesame noodles were very peppery this time (aka too much black pepper) as opposed to previous times where it was more of a hot chili and light vinegar taste. Double cooked pork was delicious although kinda fatty. Its like eating cooked bacon.
Posted 5 years ago by Katie L.
Ordered an item with no pork in it (a shrimp dish) they added pork I asked for the sauce on the side with sweet and sour chicken, so it would not be all soggy when it arrived, they called and told me they could not do that, it arrived soggy, and with little sauce. it's decent, but not the best by a long shot. Chicken (if it was not soggy) would have been much better, it was quality chicken, they just ruined it.

great food, delivery sometimes takes a while and the delivery people can never seem to spare a smile even though tipped appropriately, but great food!
Posted 5 years ago by Zianka F.
My favorite Chinese delivery. I've ordered a lot of dishes and have never been disappointed - some of my favorites being mapo tofu, dan dan noodles, chili dumplings, pork dumplings, hot and sour soup, dbl cooked pork, crispy lamb and general tsos.

Best Chinese food in Mid-Town
Posted 5 years ago by Robert N.
The delivery took an hour and a hlaf
Posted 5 years ago by Scott G.
The food is good, but overpriced. But the delivery service is bad. One time I waited for over an hour; one time the delivery guy called me by mistake which made me to wait for 15 minutes downstairs. What is irratating the is the lady who answers the phone always dimisses the question--whatever the problem is, by saying the food will be there shortly. She doesn't even bother to check. More than 3 bad experiences make the place not worth the trouble. If you like spicy chineses food, tray Lan Sheng just across the street.

Have had much better Chinese.
Posted 5 years ago by Kevin C.
This was horrible. Took 1 hour and 15 minutes to get Chinese food delivered 2 blocks away! Chinese food is supposed to take 8 minutes and 39 seconds to be delivered! Then, instead of 3 Won Ton Soups in the order they gave us egg drop or sweet and spicy. NEVER AGAIN!
Posted 5 years ago by Kevin W.
Great food, delivery times were misrepresented. Site said 15-30 min after confirmation, took over 90min for delivery to show up.

Unfortunately, this restaurant does not pay attention to the written requests which accompany one's order. I asked for 2 plates and hot oil on the side and the requests were ignored. The shredded chicken in garlic sauce, advertized as spicy, was mild.
Posted 6 years ago by John P.
Ordered the Mapo Tofu and Sesame noodles. Both were terrible and just covered in hot oil. No flavor or character. Very disappointed

Expensive and just ok. Quality issues with the meats.

It doesn't get any better than this for Szechuan food in midtown. As the lines at the restaurant attests, the medley of heat and flavors are amazing.

Let me start by saying that I'm Jewish and have been living in Murray Hill for 10 years (shocker I know...) so I think I'm qualified to rate Chinese food in this town. Over the years I've enjoyed the highs of Chinese cuisine (Wild Ginger in the 20's...Closed) as well as the lows. I can say without any hesitation that I have just experienced possibly the worst, most inedible, Chinese food in the city. I've had better Chinese in London and believe me that’s a rough town for food. We ordered the standards and all the dishes arrived swimming in oil. Honestly it was a total disgrace. I ordered from this restaurant based on the reviews and I felt I had to save other unsuspecting diners from this travesty. Even in the oil they had no flavor, almost hard to do. The sesame chicken and the steak was tender but had absolutely no taste. So basically I could of gotten the same stomach ache drinking a bottle of cooking oil and would have saved the $60...Which I will need now as a co-pay at NYU to get my stomach pumped. I haven’t found the right replacement for my favorite place that closed 2 years ago but I will continue the hunt. Hey, it’s my religion, it’s what we do.

Authentic Sichuan, cheaper than Wu Liang Ye. Delivery reasonably prompt except on rainy days. One of my "frequent" restaurants.

I just ordered the the Stir-Fried Chicken Breast w/ Mixed Veg lunch special and was upset at the lack of vegetables. There was A LOT of chicken, a few carrots, 3 snow peas, and some mushrumps. The dish looked really unappetizing - it was very white and slimy - but it tasted surprisingly good. Since I ordered for pick up, the whole thing only cost me $8 and it came with egg drop soup (also tasty). I might try reordering from Szechuan Gourmet, but I think I'll choose something from the 'most popular items' list next time.
Posted 7 years ago by Daniel B.
I went to Szechuan Gourmet with a friend because of their 2 star nytimes review and the fact that I can walk to lunch from work on 42 street.. I just made the connection that I don't need to order mediocre Murray Hill takeout anymore. The flavors are so unique - if you like spicy, this the place for you. There are lots of uncommon items on the menu that are worth a try, but if you would like to stay simple, items like the Chicken and Broccoli are really flavorful. To top it off, I ordered at 5:02 and the food was at my door at 5:16. In addition, if you dinner order is over $20 you get free spicy sesame noodles!
